While the Arduboy FX still had an outdated micro-USB port, the new Arduboy FX-C finally gets an upgrade to the more modern USB-C standard. This makes charging more convenient but can also be used to connect two handhelds for multiplayer sessions.
The new handheld also ships with 300 games instead of the 200 games that were included with the predecessor. Additional games for the Arduino-based handheld can be downloaded from the internet. The basic concept remains unchanged, since the new Arduboy FX-C also uses a single circuit board and a plastic case with a transparent front so users can see the internals. The tiny 180mAh battery is expected to provide up to eight hours of play time thanks to the rather simple hardware.
The Arduboy FX-C combines a small black-and-white display based on a 1-bit OLED panel with 128 x 64 pixels with an ATmega32u4 Arduino microcontroller, paired with 2.5KB RAM and 16MB of storage. The company notes that multiplayer does not work with just any USB-C cable. If you lose the included cable, you will have to use an expensive Thunderbolt 3 cable.
Price and availability
The Arduboy FX-C handheld is available on the company's website for $99, and a bundle with two handhelds costs $178. The handheld is limited to 500 units, and the two-pack is limited to 100 sets. A color-matched unlimited version is planned to follow later. Shipping is expected to begin in December. The company ships to Europe for an additional $15, but the listed prices do not include import or customs fees.
