The Kode Dot is a new handheld device that can be used as a kind of digital toolkit and is extremely versatile. The device also allows external sensors and actuators to be connected.

A new handheld device, the Kode Dot, is currently being funded as part of a crowdfunding campaign. Designed for versatile use, it is not necessarily a product for the typical end user. Instead, the manufacturer is targeting makers who want to implement their own projects quickly and easily.

ESP32 and AMOLED on board

The mobile device is equipped with an ESP32-S3 MCU, a SoC that is well known in the maker scene. It features a 2.13-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 502 x 410. There are also two buttons and a control pad, which can be used to navigate through menus, for example.

Users have to program the model themselves, which is likely part of its appeal. Similar to an Arduino board, external sensors and actuators can be connected, such as an LED or a sensor to measure light intensity. A gyroscope is already integrated. A microSD card slot is available, and a 500 mAh battery allows for mobile use independent of a power outlet. A microphone and speaker are integrated, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are available for wireless data transfer.

Price and availability

The mobile system, measuring 73 x 43 x 15 millimeters, is currently being offered at a price of around $129 as part of a crowdfunding campaign. As always, there are certain risks associated with crowdfunding campaigns, including the possibility that the device may not make to market or may not function as advertised. Delivery is not scheduled until July 2026.
