Anbernic has released another retro gaming handheld after a slow start to the year. Having returned to the RG556 with the RG557 last month, it has now pivoted to a device that takes in elements of not just the RG35XX SP but also the RG34XX that arrived in December (curr. $84.98 on Amazon). In summary, Anbernic has already revealed that the RG34XX SP features the following hardware:
- 3.4-inch IPS display with 720 x 480-pixel resolution
- Allwinner H700 chipset (4x ARM Cortex-A53/Mali G31-MP2 GPU)
- 2 GB LPDDR4 RAM
- Bluetooth 4.2/5 GHz Wi-Fi (802.11 ac)
- 3,300 mAh battery with 5V/1.5A charging
Unfortunately, one must be as careful when charging the RG34XX SP as with the RG35XX SP. As it stands, we would only recommend using a USB Type-A to Type-C cable, ideally the one that Anbernic supplies, based on the widely reported charging issues experienced with the RG35XX SP. Incidentally, Anbernic reports that the RG34XX SP should last up to 6 hours between charges, two fewer than the RG35XX SP, despite featuring the same chipset and battery capacity.
Anbernic has finally confirmed the footprint of its latest handheld too, which comes in at 83 x 82 x 25 mm and 178 g. By contrast, the existing RG35XX SP spans 89 x 85 x 27 mm while weighing 192 g. Setting that aside, the RG34XX SP has impressed in early reviews, with Adin Walls and TechDweeb praising it for its display, form factor and hinge mechanism, among other areas.
The Anbernic RG34XX SP is available to order globally starting at $59.99 until May 21, after which it is slated to rise to $66.99. At the time of publication, Anbernic has stock of the device in all four colour options, as well as optional 128 GB and 256 GB secondary microSD cards.
