Powkiddy V90S: Pre-orders open at under $40 for new budget retro gaming handheld
Anbernic has just released the RG34XX SP. Right on cue, Powkiddy has returned fire with the V90S almost five years after the introduction of the V90. Given the gap between the two devices, it should come as no surprise to see Powkiddy including upgrades across the board.
For example, the 3-inch and 320 x 240-pixel panel has been replaced by one that spans an extra 0.5-inches with a jump in resolution to 640 x 480 pixels. Similarly, the Powkiddy V90S contains a 3,000 mAh battery (5V/2A), compared to the 1,040 mAh equivalent found in the V90. Meanwhile, Powkiddy has swapped the Allwinner F1C100S for the much newer A133P that is already available in the Powkiddy V20.
The V90S matches the V20 with 1 GB of LPDDR3 RAM, although the former also lacks Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Instead, Powkiddy advises that people use an RTL8723BU, 8812AU or 8821CU USB adapter to provide Wi-Fi for its latest handheld. Regardless, the V90S has two microSD card readers, a small vibration motor and what Powkiddy describes as a 'double hinge' design.
For reference, the V90S measures 89 x 85 x 26 mm to make it practically the same size as the Anbernic RG35XX SP (curr. $78.99 on Amazon). The V90S is available to order globally for $44.99 or $39.99 when applying the code V90SGOOD. Please see Powkiddy's website for more details.
