Medion Erazer Deputy P25 gaming laptop review: Strong performance, weak display

Users looking for a powerful gaming platform to use during the colder months, but who don't want to invest too much money, should take a look at the Deputy P25 MD64015. As mentioned at the beginning, the device features the powerful R7 5800H Ryzen processor and the GeForce RTX 3060, which is positioned in the lower high-end range. This is complemented by 16 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM (2x 8 GB in dual-channel mode), and a 512 GB NVMe SSD. A matte Full HD IPS panel with a refresh rate of 144 Hz is responsible for image reproduction. The brand-new Windows 11 Home is installed as the operating system.
The Deputy P25 will be available for purchase starting December 9, 2021. Unfortunately, the Medion homepage left a lot to be desired at the time of testing. First, the product page contained various errors (e.g. wrong motherboard specification), then, the Windows 11 version of the laptop became impossible to find at all.
The competitors of the Deputy P25 include other 15-inch gaming devices equipped with an octa-core CPU and the GeForce RTX 3060, such as the Alienware m15 R5, the Asus TUF F15 FX506HM, as well as the Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH and the Legion S7 15ACH6 laptops. All these candidates show up in the tables as comparison devices.

Case
The Deputy P25 is based on a barebone from Clevo. The NH55EPY-M chassis used is quite thick by today's standards (3.8 cm including its feet), which theoretically benefits cooling. The weight of around 2.3 kg lies somewhere between the values exhibited by the competition, which range from 2 to 2.5 kg.
Although the brushed look of the display lid resembles aluminum, the entire case is made of plastic. Consequently, the Deputy P25 doesn't feel very premium, especially since the surfaces tend to rattle when you tap the chassis with your fingertips.
On the other hand, there's nothing to complain about in terms of workmanship. All the elements of the test device merged cleanly with each other. We would describe the design as being unimpressive, which can be seen as a plus or a minus depending on your taste. If you ignore the fact that the base unit rocks when the lid is opened, the hinges also cut a respectable figure. For the most part, the case's stability is good.
Connectivity
Port configuration
Apart from the absence of a card reader and Thunderbolt ports (AMD-related), the port configuration delivers a good performance. While two USB-A ports (1x 3.0, 1x 3.1 Gen 2) and a Kensington lock slot are on the left, two audio jacks and a USB-A 2.0 port can be found on the right. The rest of the interfaces are on the back. In addition to RJ45 LAN, you will also find HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, and USB-C here. The latter connection also supports DisplayPort, so up to three external monitors are possible.
The distribution of the ports leaves us with mixed feelings. Due to the rather centered positioning of the lateral ports, connected cables can get in the way when using a mouse.
Communication
A wireless module from Intel takes care of wireless connections. The Wi-Fi 6 AX200 performed very well in our reception test (1 m distance to the Netgear Nighthawk AX12 reference router), reaching an average of 1,665 Mb/s. On the other hand, the results of the transmission test were only good enough for a place in the midfield. Those who prefer to game using wired connections will be happy to know that 2.5 Gigabit LAN is available.

Webcam
As usual, you shouldn't expect too much from the webcam. Although color accuracy is slightly better than in many competitors, image sharpness isn't satisfactory in this case, either.

Accessories
The Deputy P25 comes with a 230-watt power adapter that weighs just under 0.7 kg, as well as with various information leaflets and booklets.
Maintenance
Things get a bit uncomfortable when it comes to maintenance. For instance, you have to remove over 10 screws on the case's bottom (some of them under the battery) and loosen the edges with a flat tool in order to gain access to the interior. You can see from our photos that the cooling system consists of two fans and several heat pipes. These are joined by the wireless module, two RAM slots, two M.2 slots, and a 2.5-inch slot. The manufacturer deserves great praise for the battery, which can be accessed from the outside. That is a rare feature these days.
Warranty
Medion provides the 15-incher with a 36-month warranty.
Input devices
Keyboard
Barebone manufacturer Clevo relies on its tried-and-tested chiclet model for the keyboard, which can impress with a good layout and a multistage as well as multicolor backlight. The typing experience is nothing to write home about, but it should be sufficient for most gamers. Despite the limited room, Clevo provides the keyboard with a full-fledged numeric keypad.
Touchpad
The touchpad has a decent size of 11 x 6.2 cm. Unlike other gaming laptops, this is a model with classic buttons for the left and right clicks. The touchpad didn't show any problems in the test in terms of gliding properties, precision, and gesture support.
Display
Unfortunately, the image quality doesn't meet the current standards in relation to the price.

* ... smaller is better
Thanks to the low black level (0.2 cd/m²), the Panda panel in use, named LM156LF-2F03, does offer a generous contrast ratio of over 1,400:1, but the 15-inch display shows clear weaknesses in other categories.
First of all, the brightness of 266 cd/m² is only sufficient for indoor use. In comparison to most contenders, color-space coverage is lousy as well. Just under 60% of sRGB results in a rather pale and poorly defined picture.

Test conditions
Processor
If you select Performance mode, the Ryzen 7 5800H is set to a PL1 of 54 watts and a PL2 of 65 watts. With these values, the octa-core processor can develop its performance well. In our CPU tests, the Deputy P25 usually ranks in the upper midfield of the comparison devices, most of which are also equipped with a fast Ryzen chip. The Cinebench loop also proves that the speed remains relatively constant over prolonged periods of time.

System performance
Things look even better in terms of system performance. The Erazer takes second place in PCMark 10. We also find the laptop to be pleasantly responsive (loading and response times, etc.). Only the start-up process could be a bit shorter.

Storage
The operating system is installed on a compact M.2 SSD with a capacity of 512 GB. Medion uses an NVMe model from Phison here, which offers a solid but not outstanding performance. Expanding storage wouldn't be a problem due to the free 2.5-inch slot as well as the secondary M.2 slot.

Graphics card
The performance of Nvidia's Ampere generation depends heavily on the cooling system and the predefined TGP. According to the graphics card driver, the RTX 3060 runs at a maximum of 140 watts in Performance mode (including Dynamic Boost), which is a lot for this graphics chip. Therefore, it's not surprising that the Deputy P25 performs above average in our GPU tests. Its results in 3DMark 11 as well as in the current 3DMark are sufficient to win a place on the podium (3D performance is almost identical in Entertainment mode [short comparison test with 3DMark 11]). Only the Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH is a bit ahead overall.
At most, one could criticize Nvidia's memory configuration. 6 GB of VRAM is no longer up to date in the high-end segment (some would therefore only place the RTX 3060 in the mid-range). In order to save energy, the 15-incher supports Nvidia's Optimus technology, which switches between the iGPU and the dGPU depending on the application.

Gaming performance
While the synthetic graphics benchmarks didn't show any problems, the gaming tests revealed a few inconsistencies. Especially when using moderate settings, performance turned out to be a bit too weak in view of the TGP. This could be related to the brand-new status of Windows 11 and the remaining performance issues, although the updates were up to date at the time of testing (November).
Regardless of this, the RTX 3060 is fast enough to run all modern games smoothly at the native resolution of 1920x1080 and high to maximum details. Things only get a bit tough in extremely demanding and/or moderately optimized games like Forza Horizon 5, where it's not always enough for 60 FPS+.
