Lenovo is unveiling a number of new products at this year's CES, but one of the most unique by far is the new ThinkBook Plus Gen 6, which features a rollable OLED display, allowing the 14-inch laptop to unfurl its screen for an impressive 16.7 inches of total screen real estate.
In the case of the ThinBook Plus Gen 6, the display extends upwards, meaning the resulting display aspect ratio becomes quite tall. Although Lenovo doesn't specify exactly what the display's ultimate aspect ratio is, it looks like it may even exceed 1:1, which is sure to bring back memories of early productivity laptops for those who were around to experience them. Lenovo claims that the rollable screen adds almost 50% more display area, and perhaps the coolest part of the whole affair is that the rollable display is deployed using a small motorised assembly that can be triggered by a dedicated button or a gesture that is detected by the webcam.
The general specifications of the rollable OLED display are nothing to scoff at either, with a claimed brightness of 400 nits and 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour space. Lenovo did not specify what the display refresh rate will be, unfortunately, so it can be assumed that the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 will stick to 60 Hz. While the display is certainly the headline feature, the rest of the laptop seems plenty competent, too, with up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 200 series CPU — likely topping out with the newly announced Core Ultra 7 265U. That CPU is paired with up to 32 GB of LPDDR5x-8533 RAM and up to 1 TB of PCIe Gen4 storage.
The ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 is expected to be available in Q1 2025, with a starting price of $3,499.00. At that price, one has to question the wisdom of being an early adopter, since there are a great many alternative options that can net you the same additional screen real-estate and ergonomic benefits at a fraction of the price and with only moderate compromises in terms of convenience. For example, you could grab something like the Asus ZenScreen OLED for around $309 on Amazon, or the 18-inch Uperfect 144 Hz, QHD portable gaming monitor with FreeSync for $269.99 to pair with an existing laptop or even a high-powered gaming laptop for around $2,000.
