Huawei remains the only company to have released a tri-folding smartphone, which it still sells exclusively in China as the Mate XT. Optimism may have already dried up for a successor, though, and it could also trickle down to competitors like Honor, Oppo, and Vivo.
Even Samsung may be scaling back its tri-fold ambitions too. According to reports from South Korea, the company still intends to introduce a tri-fold in 2026, which tallies with previous rumours. However, production volumes are said to have been scaled back to 300,000, or 1/20th of the Galaxy Z Fold6 units Samsung has budgeted to create (curr. $1,269.99 - renewed on Amazon).
Meanwhile, Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) has offered more insights into the prospective device and when exactly it may be released. For instance, the analyst believes that Samsung will adopt the form factor of the Flex G, which subsidiary Samsung Display showcased publicly again earlier this week at CES 2025 in Las Vegas.
Young also reports that this form factor will allow Samsung to match Huawei with a 10-inch diagonal when fully open. With panel shipments reportedly not starting until the last quarter of this year, Young still expects Samsung to be targeting a commercial release sometime in 2026.
