Alienware leads MSI by five points on a 100-point scale based on a report card system covering everything from the feel of the keyboard to end-user warranty options.

In what will probably incite outrage and arguments from the laptop gaming community, Laptop Mag has just named Dell's Alienware family as the go-to gaming brand in a test against eight other competitors including MSI, Razer, Gigabyte/Aorus, Acer, Lenovo, Origin, and HP. The source outlined its list based on several categories like Design, Display, keyboard, innovation, Software, Customization, and Warranty. Dell scored perfectly in a number of categories like Design, Keyboard, Customization, and Warranty for a final score of 90/100 points.

"Due to its consistently high review scores, beautiful displays, willingness to innovate and wealth of configuration options, Dell/Alienware earned first place", says Laptop Mag in its opening statement. Runners-up are MSI, Razer, and Asus with 85, 81, and 78 points, respectively.

The clear "losers" sitting on the other end of the spectrum are Gigabyte/Aorus, Lenovo, and HP with just 70, 67, and 59 points, respectively. The source points towards weak customization and "plasticky chassis" designs that plague these less recommendable options.

From our own experience with each of these brands, we can certainly agree that both Alienware and MSI notebooks are generally easier to service with a wider range of configurable options. After all, the Alienware 15/17 and MSI GT series are frequently ranked very highly on our own Top 10 Gaming Laptops list. Alienware systems are often criticized by the gaming community for being "overpriced", but there's no denying that the quality and durability of their notebooks are some of the best in the market.

HP and Lenovo in particular have only dabbled in the gaming notebook world without offering anything truly unique or desirable to gamers in terms of design and features. They've definitely been trying with the Omen and Y900 series, but these newcomers have a long way to go before matching the quality and variety that veterans Alienware and MSI currently have in their respective portfolios.

We believe HP and Lenovo are absolutely capable of developing their gaming notebooks to be the best in the world given their vast resources in the PC market. HP, for example, is an official sponsor of the Overwatch World Cup and has been providing Omen systems for the professional players throughout the tournament. The upcoming Omen refresh will include Max-Q and GTX 1070 graphics with shipments starting next month.
