KT Pocket: Early details about new KT-R2 gaming handheld revealed with flagship-sounding hardware
The retro gaming handheld market has exploded in recent years thanks to the likes of Anbernic and Powkiddy, among others. Arguably, Anbernic has pushed the scene to saturation point recently though with its monthly release cycle. To that end, while less than a month has gone by since the introduction of the RG406V (curr. $249.98 on Amazon), there are now rumours that an RG406P and even an RG408 are on the horizon.
Now, the team behind the KT-R1 have shared initial details about a putative successor on a crowdfunding website in China. Unfortunately, KT-Pocket has not revealed what the KT-R2 looks like yet. Instead, it has focused on potential specifications.
For instance, KT-Pocket is currently working towards delivering the KT-R2 with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. Apparently, if uptake is poor in this regard, it may pivot to the more cost-effective Dimensity 1100, which Retroid already offers inside last year's Pocket 4 Pro. Moreover, the company is allowing people to configure their ideal KT-R2 with a choice between eight colour options and plastic, aluminium alloy and magnesium alloy shells.
On top of that, there are currently options for 4G or Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as 6 GB RAM/128 GB storage, 8 GB RAM/256 GB storage and 12 GB of RAM/512 GB of storage variants. Please note that not all these SKUs will enter mass production. Seemingly, only the most popular will be adopted. As it stands, KT-Pocket's crowdfunding campaign will run until December, after which it will take three months for the company to obtain engineering samples. With initial shipments set six months after that, it would appear that the KT-R2 may not be with us until roughly this time next year.
