Steam Deck becomes handheld Hackintosh by running macOS Sequoia
Valve ships the Steam Deck with SteamOS, which is an Arch-based Linux distro. However, as the gaming handheld is very similar to any other PC, it has what it takes to run a mainstream operating system. For example, Windows runs well on it, but X user @whatdahopper is the first to showcase the device running macOS Sequoia.
As @whatdahopper says, it took a group effort to get the gaming handheld to run Apple's latest desktop operating system. However, it's currently pointless to get the macOS Sequoia installed on the Steam Deck. There's no GPU acceleration yet, but the group believes things will change when the iGPU kext (kernel extension) for AMD Van Gogh lands.
That could happen sooner rather than later, as macOS already has support for RDNA 2. When that happens, the gaming handheld could become a proper portable Hackintosh. Of course, you wouldn't want to install Sequoia on the Steam Deck to game on it, as the gaming scene on Apple's operating system isn't as great as it is on Windows and Linux.
So, with support for the iGPU inside the gaming handheld, the Steam Deck could eventually become a functional DIY handheld Hackintosh, but with many compromises when compared to a MacBook (base 2023 MacBook Pro curr. $1,299 on Amazon). Moreover, @whatdahopper mentioned that getting macOS Sequoia to run on the device wasn't as easy as installing Windows on it, which is something worth considering if you're planning to install the Apple operating system.
