Special Edition Hyrule Switch Lite gets ultimate mod treatment
In pursuit of the best Legend of Zelda gaming experience, Taki Udon details the steps necessary to transform the special edition Hyrule Switch Lite into the ultimate Switch Lite system. The mod includes a screen upgrade, battery upgrade, and new Hall effect joysticks. Although not considered an easy installation, the results speak for themselves.
For the screen, Taki uses the recently released SUPER5 OLED. Traditionally, the Switch lite screen is capable of producing 400 Nits of brightness. In contrast, the SUPER5 OLED panel produces 400 Nits at 75 percent brightness and maxes out at 600 Nits. As with most OLED panels, contrast and color gamut are massively improved with the SUPER5 OLED panel, as well as providing increased energy efficiency.
For the battery upgrade, Taki uses an upgraded 5,000 mAh battery to replace the stock 3,570 mAh. Taki mentions that this is a necessary upgrade considering that despite the increased energy efficiency of the OLED panel, the SUPER5 OLED still uses more power at max brightness than the stock panel. The specific battery used is not mentioned, but there are many available from third-party retailers.
Finally, the stock joysticks are replaced with tunnel magnetic resistance Hall effect joysticks. The TMR Hall joysticks use less power and have a lower operating voltage than their traditional counterparts. This ensures that performance will not be degraded due to battery life, and they solve the notorious stick drift issues plaguing the platform.
If users attempt to install the mods themselves, they should be comfortable completely disassembling the Switch. Taki does not go in depth into the process but does show the entirety of the installation. Undoubtedly, the most delicate aspect of the process is installing the screen. Taki uses a heat gun to melt the glue holding the screen in place, removes it with any remaining adhesive, and installs the new panel toward the end of reassembly.
