In an exclusive playtest program, Switch owners will have the opportunity to test a new, previously unknown feature of the Nintendo Switch Online service - but only with a non-disclosure agreement. Speculation is now running high as to what this could be: a new feature for the Alarmo alarm clock or something related to the upcoming Switch 2.

Since October 10 at 3 pm (UTC), Nintendo Swich Online account holders have been able to apply for the mysterious Playtest program. The search for 10,000 test participants was completed quickly, and as a result, applications are no longer being accepted. However, only users with an active Expansion Pack membership were eligible to apply in the first place.

The testing phase will take place from October 24 to November 6, 2024. Participants will receive a 2.2 GB program, which is recommended to be used in TV mode with a LAN connection for optimal performance. Nintendo will not reveal the content of the playtest. On the contrary: participants must sign a non-disclosure agreement that prohibits the sharing of details.

One obvious assumption is that the playtest could have something to do with the Nintendo Switch 2, for which the first render images and much more information are now known. Alternatively, it could be a feature for the Alarmo clock, announced on October 9, which uses popular Nintendo characters like Mario, Link, and Pikmin to display the time on a circular screen.

On Reddit, the speculation goes even further. Among other things, there is the assumption that it could be a game streaming service. Some Redditors also consider a function for downloading large games step by step to be possible.
