Gears of War: E-Day official story trailer drops

Xbox Game Studios and developers The Coalition and People Can Fly premiered the official story trailer for Gears of War: E-Day during Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live on August 25. The two-minute trailer shows the immediate chaos of Emergence Day on the planet Sera, setting up the prequel campaign ahead of its October 6, 2026 launch on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Explore Marcus and Dom's first battle against the Locust Horde
Gears of War: E-Day is set 14 years before the original 2006 game and follows young Coalition of Ordered Governments soldiers Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. The pair have just returned home as veterans of the Pendulum Wars when the Locust Horde erupts through Sera's surface, tearing apart cities and killing civilians within hours.
The trailer leans into the horror of that first encounter. Instead of the hardened Marcus and Dom fans know from the original trilogy, this version shows two soldiers caught off guard by an enemy they don't understand yet, fighting to hold ground against Locust numbers and weaponry they've never faced before.
Key details from the reveal: the setting is Emergence Day, 14 years before the first Gears of War; the leads are young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago; the enemy is the early Locust Horde, including drone units and Corpsers; and the game launches October 6, 2026, on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass.
Unreal Engine 5 tech highlights brutal atmospheric tone
The Coalition and People Can Fly rebuilt Gears of War: E-Day from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, using destruction physics and upgraded character rendering to keep the franchise's dark visual style intact. The studio has said the campaign sticks to the series' linear, story-driven level design but adds new movement options like sprint sliding and climbing on top of refined cover mechanics.
Gears of War: E-Day launches globally on October 6, 2026, and will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass for both console and PC.
