Fortnite down as server outage triggers login and matchmaking errors

Fortnite went down for players on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch on August 28, blocking logins and matchmaking. Downdetector reports spiked as players hit network errors, frozen loading screens, and random disconnects trying to get into the lobby. Complaints piled up quickly on social media as well, with players on X asking whether the game was down for everyone or just their account.

Epic's status page lagged behind player reports

Epic Games' public status dashboard initially showed all systems as operational even as complaints mounted across Downdetector and social media. Players attempting to sign in described server connection prompts and failed account handshakes that blocked entry into Battle Royale matches. The gap between the dashboard and player experience is a familiar pattern for Fortnite outages, where issues often show up in user reports well before Epic's own monitoring catches up. Reports were widespread enough to affect most major platforms, though Epic had not issued an official explanation for the disruption at the time.

This is not the first disruption Fortnite has faced in recent weeks. Epic's status history shows a separate incident on August 27 that kept services degraded for close to nine hours, and outage trackers list a prior login issue on August 13. Fortnite has logged well over a hundred tracked incidents since 2020, and most of those disruptions have historically cleared up within under an hour.

Service appears to have stabilized

Outage tracking shows report volumes have dropped sharply since the initial spike, suggesting the issue has largely resolved. Epic has not published a postmortem or confirmed a specific cause, so the underlying trigger remains unclear. 

Players still running into connection errors can try restarting the game client or verifying game files through the Epic Games Launcher, standard steps for clearing a stuck session, though there's no official guidance yet tied to this specific incident. Players wanting real-time updates should keep an eye on Epic's official status channels rather than relying on the dashboard alone, given the delay seen this time around.
