Elden Ring Switch 2 performance improves in new videos, but may fall below 30 fps

The August 28th Elden Ring Tarnished Edition release date is fast approaching. FromSoftware developers are running out of time to optimize the Switch 2 game. After a delay to tweak performance, new videos show more consistent visuals on the Nintendo system. Still, borderline 30 fps graphics may not persuade buyers worried about the high price tag.
The slow smoothing out process
Japanese gaming site Famitsu generally praised how the Souls game transitioned to the portable console. Although the magazine cautions the build isn’t final, YouTube footage provides a glimpse at docked and handheld modes.
When connected to a TV, the Elden Ring Switch 2 port appears to render at 30 fps, possibly reaching a higher mark at times. Unlike earlier videos, there is no apparent stuttering upon entering open-world areas. Combat also seems responsive, even lacking the 60 fps performance option available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Handheld mode has always been the larger concern, with the GPU and CPU somewhat throttled. The Famitsu tester was able to “play smoothly without any particular discomfort.” In the YouTube clip, the graphics largely maintain the same targets as when docked. However, other recent leaked recordings expose frame rate drops in intense boss fights.
A challenging port
Whether gamers approve of the Elden Ring Tarnished Edition may hinge on expectations. Even on the PS5 and Series X consoles, the FromSoftware title struggles to hold 60 fps. A closer comparison is the Steam Deck, where, after numerous updates, developers optimized the game for Valve’s hardware. At 1280 × 800 and reasonable detail settings, frame rates now meet the 30 fps benchmark.
Another obstacle for wavering Switch 2 owners is cost. The action RPG demands $79.99, and its Game-Key Card format requires a large download. Also, the Tarnished Pack with two new starting classes, armor, and weapons will arrive on other platforms for $4.99.
With the Elden Ring Switch 2 release date imminent, the industry will soon learn if the performance gains are enough to convince skeptics.
