The Snapdragon 8 Elite appears to be super energy efficient, as the SoC reportedly allows the OnePlus 13 and ROG Phone 9 Pro to massively outdo their predecessors in battery life. Both phones also show impressive gaming potential with the devices running Genshin Impact without any thermal throttling.

Qualcomm made some ambitious promises when it officially revealed the Snapdragon 8 Elite last month. The company claims that not only does the Snapdragon 8 Elite has a 45% faster Oryon CPU and 40% faster Adreno GPU than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but the SoC also enjoys a 44% and 40% more energy efficiency in the CPU and GPU departments.

So, if Qualcomm’s numbers are accurate, phones based on the Snapdragon 8 Elite should be much faster and longer lasting than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-based devices. According to Dave2D’s testing of the new OnePlus 13 and the Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro, Qualcomm indeed looks to have cooked something special with the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Snapdragon 8 Elite has super energy efficiency

In the PCMark Battery Test, Dave2D shows that both the OnePlus 13 and the ROG Phone 9 Pro last considerably longer than their Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 predecessors. Where the OnePlus 12 (5,400 mAh) lasts for only 12 hours and 13 minutes, the OnePlus 13 with its 6,000 mAh cell endures for a whopping 17 hours and 25 minutes. Similarly, the Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro with 300 mAh more capacity adds 3 hours and 19 minutes to the 11 hours and 10 minutes of the ROG Phone 8 Pro.

Putting these numbers into perspective, the OnePlus 13, with a battery capacity advantage of 11.11%, enjoys a tremendous 43% more battery life. The ROG Phone 9 Pro, for its 5.4% larger cell, features a much larger 30% bump in endurance.

Snapdragon 8 Elite offers longer and throttle-free gaming

The energy efficiency of the Snapdragon 8 Elite also compliments its gaming performance, as the SoC can not only play games for longer but can also do so without throttling. This is quite evident in Dave2D’s Genshin Impact test where the Snapdragon 8 Elite-based OnePlus 13 and ROG Phone 9 Pro play the game for 1 hour and 48 minutes and 1 hour and 14 minutes longer than the OnePlus 12 and ROG Phone 8, respectively.

More impressively, the OnePlus 13 and ROG Phone 9 Pro suffered from no thermal throttling during the Genshin Impact test. Granted, the beefy cooling solutions are also undoubtedly doing a lot of heavy lifting, but the Snapdragon 8 Elite and its excellent efficiency are the key here.

Long story short, Qualcomm seems to have nailed the Snapdragon 8 Elite. This makes us quite excited for upcoming smartphone launches like the Galaxy S25 which are reported to bring gaming features like Qualcomm’s Adreno Frame Motion Engine upsampling.
