Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 PS5 ports may have a steep $80 price

Treyarch revealed that Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are finally coming to the PS5. While the announcement of their July release date didn’t include a price, an insider has shared clues. CharlieIntel reported that the Xbox store had updated the cost of both shooters. Without discounts, the Call of Duty games could demand a combined $80.

If the PlayStation Store follows the same formula, the various $10 DLCs will not be complimentary. Some additional content is more affordable, like the Season Pass, which is now $30 instead of $50. The other positive news is that most cosmetics are free.

TheGamer calculated that purchasing Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 with all the add-ons costs buyers up to $150. That’s sparking criticism from supporters of the Activision franchise, who note that the games debuted in 2010 and 2012. Also, the PS5 ports aren't remasters or remakes, ruling out major graphical or quality-of-life upgrades.

PS3 limitations

PC and Xbox gamers have already been able to access the military shooters. Steam users can find both on Valve’s marketplace. Microsoft’s backward compatibility efforts ensure that older titles remain playable on its consoles. Unfortunately, the PS3's unorthodox cell processor has made modernizing them for current-gen PlayStation hardware difficult.

Activision has hesitated to discount still popular older Call of Duty games. On Steam, when not on sale, buyers encounter a familiar $40 price tag. Another issue is that loyal fans often face outdated multiplayer modes besieged by cheaters. Treyarch has not clarified whether the Black Ops and Black Ops 2 PS5 release dates will introduce new servers.

PlayStation gamers likely won’t see native 120 Hz visuals to gain a competitive edge. Still, the original single-player campaign and zombies modes will be available in the ports. Hopefully, the publisher offers a bundle with DLC that makes reliving the classic shooters less painful on wallets.
