Call of Duty studio Treyarch says it is ready to make something new as Black Ops 7 support ends

After two consecutive years at the helm of the Call of Duty franchise, veteran developer Treyarch is officially preparing for its next major project. Having led the development of both Black Ops 6 in 2024 and Black Ops 7 in 2025, the studio announced it is ready to step away from its current era and build an entirely fresh experience. The transition coincides with the launch of Season 6 for Black Ops 7 on September 17.
In a recent dev talk video, Treyarch Design Director Kevin Drew addressed the community, characterizing the studio's pivot as a poignant but necessary step forward. "This is a bittersweet goodbye, but I think over the last two years, we've learned a lot," Drew noted. "We've tried a lot of things in our current era. But we're ready to make something new and something that nobody's ever experienced before."
The studio's recent tenure was defined by significant gameplay experiments and sheer scale. Co-Studio Head Yale Miller reflected on this ambition, praising the development team for pushing boundaries with Black Ops 6 and delivering massive amounts of content with Black Ops 7.
Miller pointed to major systemic overhauls, like the implementation of "Omnimovement" and "Endgame" mechanics, as key innovations they were proud to deliver. He also expressed deep gratitude to the game’s vocal community for their engagement and to partner studios like Raven Software for their crucial support in bringing multiplayer maps and Zombies experiences to life.
Drew's assertion that Treyarch is building something unprecedented raises immediate questions about the future of the Black Ops brand. As one of the most recognizable and historically profitable sub-brands in gaming, walking away from the Black Ops name entirely would be a major shift.
However, following the high-profile commercial hurdles faced by Black Ops 7, the studio may be giving the series a much-needed rest. It is currently unclear if Treyarch's next game will be a completely new sub-series within the Call of Duty universe or a radical reinvention that retains the Black Ops title.
While Treyarch focuses on its mysterious new project, the franchise's immediate future lies with Infinity Ward. Miller confirmed that Treyarch's developers have already been participating in playtests for Infinity Ward's upcoming Modern Warfare 4, which is scheduled for release later this year. As Microsoft and Xbox leadership seek ways to propel Call of Duty back to the heights of its peak popularity, empowering Treyarch to build "something new" could be a critical component of that strategy.
