RPCS3 clarifies official system requirements, explains why PS3 emulation requires beefy CPU

Developers behind RPCS3, one of the most popular PS3 emulators on the market, recently revealed the official RPCS3 system requirements. RPCS3 recommends:
- A Ryzen 5 5600 or an Intel Core i5-10400
- 16 GB of RAM
- A Radeon RX 5600 XT or a GeForce RTX 2060
- Windows 11 or Linux
If you see the full RPCS3 system requirements, it becomes clear that the program requires hardware that is much stronger than the PS3 to run PS3 games at or above PS3 quality. Many users raised this concern with the developers of RPCS3. For instance, one user asked why emulating PS3 games requires a Ryzen 5 5600 and 16 GB OF RAM? Another user exclaimed, “that's some heavy CPU requirements for max performance, I'm surprised, especially considering the GPU requirement.”
So, the key issue here is that users are finding it hard to understand how a software emulating a console released back in 2006 requires decently powerful hardware. RPCS3 developers have now issued a small clarification.
PS3 emulation is affected more by the CPU and OS than by GPU
The team behind RPCS3 explains on X that the challenge with PS3 emulation is that the console’s Cell CPU has 2 different Instruction Set Architectures (PPC + SIMD) inside the same chip and 8 cores. So, “your GPU is not what defines performance when emulating the PS3”, as actual emulation work has more to do with the CPU, the OS, and the RAM.
So, the CPU performance is the most important factor for RPCS3, followed by the operating system and RAM. The GPU performance comes in last place. This is why RPCS3 mandates the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, one of the best gaming CPUs on the market, for maximum PS3 emulation performance, while the GPU requirement stays at the last-gen RX 7800 XT and the RTX 4070.
In other words, if you are building a PC for emulating different systems and want to be able to play PS3 games using RPCS3, you need to put most of your money towards the CPU and the RAM.
On the flip side, you can still buy PS3 games on the PS Store. You can also find refurbished PS3 consoles rather easily on Amazon/eBay. So, playing PS3 games doesn’t mean you have to resort to emulation.
