Ever since Activision announced that the campaign for Black Ops 7 will be always online, fans believed it was a controversial decision. Now with the game available to the public, the real-world implications of it are coming to light. No matter what you’re doing in the campaign or how intense of a battle you’re in, the game can get interrupted if there is an update.
As shared by ModernWarzone on X, a short clip shows the campaign cutscene getting interrupted because of an update. The “Daily Update Available” notification pops up giving the player no other option but to update, interrupting the cutscene and taking them out of the game. Whether that particular update had anything to do with the campaign itself, or address the multiplayer, is unclear. That being said, the player did not lose any progress, but it definitely ruined the immersion.
Furthermore, because of the always online aspect, the campaign cannot be paused at any time. Opening the menu would still have the game running in the background. Not being able to pause could become annoying very quickly as if you’re killed during that time, you will lose some progress and have to do part of the mission again.
This always online mode has been implemented for the Worlds Collide endgame where it becomes a shared experience between up to 32 players. This endgame starts after the main campaign missions, which also also playable in co-op, and will allow players to unlock items that they can use in other Black Ops 7 game modes. Even though there will be other players online in the same world, there is no PvP.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is now available via Steam and Battle.net on PC, as well as on PS5/PS4 and Xbox Series X/Series S via their respective stores.
