Best Buy to host Ocarina of Time remake and Zelda Switch 2 console midnight launch

Reflecting incredible pre-order demand, one retailer plans a midnight launch for an anticipated title and handheld. At 12 AM ET on the Ocarina of Time remake release date, Best Buy will let shoppers buy the Switch 2 game in stores. It also intends to have the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 console and the Pro Controller in limited quantities.

U.S. buyers can now visit a page on the store’s website with a countdown clock. The event begins at midnight ET on November 5th, but in other time zones, it should start late on November 4th. Gamers who have already secured pre-orders may be able to pick up their purchases at physical locations.

A midnight launch for a special edition console is fairly unusual. Best Buy did not take the same approach with the Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED in 2023. Still, given how scalpers have preyed on the Ocarina of Time remake, the Zelda Switch 2 console, and accessories, it’s a welcome opportunity. The only downside is that the hardware ships earlier elsewhere, on October 29th.

A scalpers delight

Since pre-orders began on September 8th, both the title and the handheld have frequently sold out. As a result, eBay sellers profit, often flipping the $520 console for prices exceeding $700-$800. Despite Nintendo likely producing a massive number of cartridges, even the physical Zelda game has been scarce.

The first batch of Ocarina of Time cases includes a foil cover, which has increased their appeal among collectors. Brazilian retailer Gamer Hub blames the alternate packaging for not being able to keep it in stock. Depending on the region, buyers may receive other bonuses like stickers or Spiritual Stone replicas. Desperate fans can settle for the always-available digital eShop version.

So far, competing chains haven't followed Best Buy with a similar event to commemorate the Ocarina of Time remake release date. Online shoppers should monitor the HotStock tracker for the best chance to secure the game, Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 console, and controller.
