Beelink GK Mini PC Review: Ready-to-Go HTPC

Like GMK, Beelink offers a variety of inexpensive mini PCs in contrast to the often pricier ones from Zotac or Intel. Its options often come fully configured with RAM and storage to be more plug-and-play and appropriate for users who just want something cheap for browsing, streaming, and other undemanding tasks with minimal multitasking.
Beelink offers 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of SSD storage for $229 USD or users can double the storage for just $20 more. More information can be found on its product page here.

Case
The first thing users will notice when picking up the GK Mini is how incredibly lightweight it is. Dimensions aren't all that different from the Intel NUC11TNKi5 and yet the Beelink system is almost half the weight. Its more limited set of features, thinner chassis materials, and slower overall performance contribute to the significantly lower weight.
Connectivity
Port options include four USB-A 3.0 ports and two HDMI. Outputting at native 4K 60 Hz is supported. There are unfortunately no USB-C ports or an IR receiver, either.
Note that all ports are upside-down when compared to most other NUCs and laptops.

Maintenance
Accessories and Warranty
The packaging includes a removable VESA bracket that attaches to the bottom of the unit. A standard one-year limited warranty applies, but claiming said warranty may be difficult due to overseas shipping.
Performance
Processor
CPU performance is roughly 30 percent and 60 percent slower than the Core i3-1005G1 in multi-threaded and single-threaded loads, respectively. Even so, it's still significantly faster than the Atom x7-E3950 or Celeron N4000 series.
The same Celeron J4125 CPU can also be found on the GMK NucBox K1.

Storage Devices
The system ships with a generic 256 GB SATA III M.2 2280 SSD with a Silicon Motion SM2258XT controller. Though transfer rates don't come close to most NVMe SSDs, overall performance is balanced considering the low-power CPU.

GPU Performance
Graphics performance is significantly slower than the already slow UHD Graphics 620. Fortunately, it is sufficient for 4K video streaming.

The internal fan seems to be always active even when idling on desktop with no running applications. RPM doesn't appear to change when running higher loads either, at least in our experience. The constant RPM is preferable over constant pulsing, but it's too bad that the unit is never truly silent. For living rooms and HTPC setups, the unit will be far away enough that the fan won't be an issue.
For something truly silent, the fanless Zotac ZBOX-CI660 Nano or Chuwi GBox can be decent 1080p streaming alternatives.

Verdict
The strongest attributes of the Beelink are its ease-of-use, cool running temperatures, and inexpensive asking price that will attract basic 1080p HTPC users. It's a good fit for users who have no need for the latest Core ix processors, Wi-Fi 6, NVMe storage options, or anything over 8 GB of RAM. You'll definitely want to add a secondary 2.5-inch SATA III drive to expand storage down the line.
An inexpensive mini PC great for basic 1080p streaming. It begins to struggle once 4K and light multitasking are introduced.
A notable drawback of the GK Mini is its lack of USB-C which could have added DisplayPort and Power Delivery for more versatility. 4K video streaming is decent until you start running other background tasks simultaneously such as web browsing. More demanding HTPC users should invest in something more powerful.
Price and availability
As of this writing, the Beelink GK Mini is on sale at Amazon for just $199 USD.
