The official Battlefield account on X has confirmed an open beta for Battlefield 6 is coming soon. While an exact date has not been shared, the post did talk about the controversial weapons system and gave players some good news. Back when EA had officially announced the new unlocked weapon classes, fans were divided so this announcement looks to make things right.
The post from Battlefield on X simply states that with the open beta, players will be able to choose official playlists with Signature weapons locked to classes or unlocked. For context, in previous Battlefield games before Battlefield 2042, there were four core classes and each class had a clearly defined role with specific Signature weapons. These Signature weapons were locked to the specific class meaning, for example, those who wanted to use sniper rifles would choose the Recon class. This weapon system was appreciated by both casual and veteran Battlefield players, but with Battlefield 2042, EA made the controversial decision to unlock weapons from classes.
With Battlefield 6, players were hoping for a return to the original class system but back in May, EA announced that will not be the case. It stated that each class will have access to the full range of weapons, but class-specific bonuses and unique “signature” elements will play a key role.
Now, with the upcoming open beta for Battlefield 6, EA is letting players choose between open or closed weapons. This would allow veteran players to stick to the locked weapon class system while newer more casual players will be able to experiment with the new unlocked system. Commenters are once again divided on this decision as some welcome the update while others question the point of having classes in the first place, if every class can use every weapon.
As mentioned earlier, EA has not shared a date for the open beta but recent leaks suggest that the official reveal will take place on July 31 with the open beta starting as soon as August 4.
