Verdict: Astronomical pricing fails to reach escape velocity
The Asus ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 OC Edition is the company's über flagship take on the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 GPU.
The ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC sports excellent build quality and — even if quite bulky — attractive aesthetics with matte surfaces and a neutral two-tone color theme.
Going the Astral way gets you a high RTX 5080 overclock plus a quad-fan vapor chamber cooling setup, additional fan headers, dual VBIOS modes, and dual HDMI-outs.
However, these extras come at a cost. The card will set you back by roughly $1,700, which is already a markup over the original $1,500 launch MSRP, which is again a 50% hike over the Founders Edition's MSRP.
More importantly, these features do not actually translate into noticeable real-world performance gains over other RTX 5080 models including the Founders Edition and Asus's own Prime GeForce RTX 5080 OC.
The ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC can only offer low single-digit gains at best, and it does so with higher power consumption and louder fans than the RTX 5080 FE, making it hard to recommend unless you place form over function and fetti.

The ROG Strix has traditionally been Asus's flagship GPU lineup, but the company has taken things up a notch with the new Nvidia Blackwell generation.
The ROG Astral is Asus's halo offering for the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs. Departing from convention, the Astral boasts an all-metal construction, a unique quad-fan setup, and a highly factory overclocked 2,760 MHz boost (for reference, the RTX 5080 Founders Edition is clocked at a 2,617 MHz boost).
The Astral is indeed priced eponymously, but do the added perks actually translate to measurable performance gains over other RTX 5080 cards? Let's find out.

A closer look at the Asus ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 OC
The ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 OC sports a matte dark grey-silver dual-tone color theme that blends well with Asus's top-end ROG Crosshair and Maximus motherboards, and the ROG Thor III PSU.
A thin RGB strip runs along the length of the card. Lighting effects can be customized via Asus's GPU Tweak III utility.
The card measures 76 mm in thickness and weighs a massive 2.86 kg. It gladly gobbles up the width of four PCIe slots, which doesn't bode well for small form factor cases.
The ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC uses Nvidia's new 12V-2x6 power connector. Beside the power connector, there are two fan headers that allow syncing the case fans with the GPU ones.
There's also a VBIOS switch that toggles between Performance (P mode) and Quiet (Q mode). We used the P mode for all tests and tested for potential fan noise differences in the Q mode.

By default, the ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC operates at a locked 400 W TGP with no scope for further increasing the power target. A newer VBIOS update allows pushing the TGP all the way up to 450 W.
GPU Tweak III
Asus's GPU Tweak III is a handy utility that provides comprehensive monitoring and quick access to commonly used overclocking controls.
There's a handy 12V-2x6 status indicator that confirms proper pin seating while reporting the power passing through each pin. This feature is only available on flagship ROG Astral and Strix series and not in cards like the Prime GeForce RTX 5080 OC, for example.

Emissions: Throttle-free performance with loud quad-axial fans
The ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC uses a vapor chamber coupled with a phase change thermal pad and a total of four axial fans to ensure optimal cooling.
Stress test
The GPU sustains boost clocks of 2,915 MHz during a Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty stress test at 1080p Ultra with 57.7 °C average core temperatures while drawing just 271 W.
Stressing with FurMark (1,280x720, no AA) sees the ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC boosting similarly, but at power draws nearer to its 400 W TGP and at a higher 65.6 °C average core temperature.
Cyberpunk 2077 1080p Ultra and 4K Ultra FPS Chart
We find no throttling concerns during a Cyberpunk 2077 stress test at both 1080p Ultra and 4K Ultra settings.

Surface temperatures
At an ambient 22 °C temperature, the rear shroud becomes considerably hot at 64.7 °C while the GPU area rises up to 70.7 °C.
The area near the 12V-2x6 connector remains at a tolerable 51.2 °C.
Noise levels
The ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC breaks with tradition by adding a fourth axial fan at the rear to improve vertical airflow towards the top of the case.
However, this results in higher fan noise emissions up to 51.29 dB(A) under load while gaming in the Performance VBIOS.
Because the center and rear fans are paired, the only way to stop the rear fan is to physically disconnect it from the PCB.
That being said, the fans stop completely in idle.

Energy management: Marginally higher power draws compared to the RTX 5080 FE
We see a 13% increase in power consumption with the ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC compared to the RTX 5080 FE in FurMark, although it is a more modest 6% in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p Ultra.
