Apple Watch 12 and Ultra 4 launch with sensor upgrades, S11 ARM chip, and innovative features
The Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3 ($879 on Amazon) have just been succeeded by new models. While the new smartwatches don’t feature any major design changes, they’re expected to impress with some significant performance upgrades.
First and foremost, Apple has incorporated an improved ECG and a new heart rate sensor that measures the pulse every five seconds – 60 times more frequently than before. Heart rate variability is now tracked every five minutes, instead of just every two hours. The Apple Health app has been fundamentally redesigned and is intended to provide users with deeper insights into their health through AI-generated text and guided workouts.
One of the most exciting new features is "Audio Intelligence." By combining the microphones in smartwatches with artificial intelligence, deaf users can be alerted to important sounds such as a doorbell or an alarm. On the other hand, a transcript of the last 15 seconds of a conversation can be generated, which is intended to allow for particularly quick note-taking. Meetings or conversations can be recorded and summarized using AI. Privacy is not compromised in this process, as no audio data is stored, and even Apple cannot directly access the audio.
Audio Intelligence will launch as a beta later this year and will initially support only English. The feature is powered by the brand-new Apple S11 ARM chip, which is based on the Apple A20 Pro. The chip features two efficiency cores, a single-core graphics chip, and a quad-core AI accelerator. The Apple Watch Series 12 is also available with a ceramic case in white and blue at a higher price. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is expected to deliver a longer battery life of "over two days."
Pricing and availability
The Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399, while the Apple Watch Ultra 4 costs $799, meaning both models are priced the same as their direct predecessors. Pre-orders open today, and shipping begins on September 18.
