With the update to iOS 27, Apple’s Camera app finally gets comprehensive manual settings.
The Apple iPhone’s Camera app has offered very few options so far, leaving photography enthusiasts with little choice but to switch to a third-party app. That will change on Monday, as the update to iOS 27 will bring numerous pro features to Apple’s Camera app.

Along with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple has introduced a revamped Camera app that finally gives users more manual control over the cameras, both when taking photos and recording videos. While the variable aperture remains exclusive to the latest flagship smartphones, the update to iOS 27 also brings many of these new features to older iPhones, ranging from the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 17 Pro ($1,200 on Amazon).

iOS 27 will be released on Monday, September 14, for all compatible iPhones. At first glance, the new Camera app looks virtually unchanged – zoom settings and the photo and video modes are located at the bottom of the screen as usual, while buttons at the top of the screen provide access to features such as the flash or Live Photos. However, the menu button, which hides all other settings, is now prominently placed to the right of the shutter button.

After pressing this button, iOS 27 not only allows you to select options but also replaces the buttons at the top of the screen, so that accessing many features now requires just one click instead of two. Even more exciting, however, is that the Camera app adds a number of new options.

During the announcement of the iPhone 18 Pro (Max), Apple demonstrated, among other things, the ability to manually adjust the shutter speed, white balance, and focus, though it remains unclear on which iPhone models these new features will be available. It’s also possible to display a histogram, which makes it easier to assess exposure.
