A new leak says AMD's Navi 48-based Radeon RX 8800 XT performs on par with the Radeon RX 7900 XTX while consuming 25% lesser power. Additionally, it also brings forth a 45% performance improvement in ray tracing.

While Intel is all set to launch its newest mid-range graphics cards tomorrow (December 3), AMD decided it would be better to wait until CES 2025 to show off its RDNA 4-based offerings. A new leak from Chiphell (via Wccftech) now sheds light on how its top-spec variant could perform compared to its predecessor.

ZhangZhaongHao, a reliable leaker, says the Radeon RX 8800 XT (tentative) not offer much in the way of rasterization performance improvement compared to the Radeon RX 7900 XTX. Instead, it will focus its efforts on better ray tracing prowess, where it bests the RDNA 3 flagship by 45%, at least is Resident Evil 4.

This should ideally carry over to other titles, and the leaker says its ray tracing prowess is equal to that of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 or RTX 4080 Super. RDNA 4 was tipped to arrive with a bunch of new ray tracing IP. Some features even made it to the PlayStation 5 Pro.

Additionally, the Radeon RX 8800 XT consumes 25% lesser power than the 7900 XTX, which isn't surprising, given it will be manufactured on a more advanced TSMC node and will likely feature a smaller, monolithic GPU. While there's no word about its VRAM capacity, 16 GB (20 Gbps GDDR6 modules) seems likely given its stature as a RX x800 XT tier SKU. Its Navi 48 GPU could come with 64 CUs.

Not too long ago, we got a glimpse at what could be the Radeon RX 8800 (non XT) on Geekbench. It, too, came with 16 GB of VRAM but with 56 CUs. The actual listing didn't mean much, as the GPU was clearly not operating at its full potential. That leaves us with the entry-level Navi 44-powered model, which will supposedly trade blows with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti. Even Intel seems to be targeting that segment with its Arc B580.

So far, there is no information about how much the Radeon RX 8800 XT or RX 8800 will cost, but if AMD can sell the former at $600, it can potentially decimate the upper-mid-range GPU market. An Nvidia alternative isn't due to arrive until later in 2025, so AMD has some time to establish itself in the market.
