AMD's upcoming RDNA 4 graphics cards could follow Strix Point's suit and get a name change. A new leak from Chiphell has hinted at a new naming scheme that makes the cards sound more like its rival's offerings. Instead of Radeon RX 8800 XT (or similar nomenclature), one of the new models will start with the number 9, followed by 0 and 7.
That opens up quite a few possibilities. The easiest one would be Radeon RX 9070, Radeon RX 9060, etc. This makes the most sense because we saw something similar with Strix Halo, where its 40 CU RDNA GPU was called Radeon 8060S. Now, it isn't beyond AMD to shoehorn in AI wherever possible, but that seems unlikely in this case.
If accurate, future AMD desktop GPUs will also get their first digit incremented by two, like their desktop counterparts. AMD's strategy mirrors that of Strix Point, where it got changed from Ryzen AI 100 to Ryzen AI 300 at the last minute just so that it would sound 'higher' than Intel's Lunar Lake Core Ultra 200V lineup.
