Some time ago, the 'Pro' variant of AMD's top-spec Strix Halo CPU showed up on Geekbench. Now, we get to see its regular version with an equally long, albeit slightly less (key word here being slightly) confusing name. The Ryzen AI Max Plus 395 has been benchmarked, giving us a rough idea about its CPU and GPU performance. It powers an Asus ROG Flow Z13 laptop-tablet hybrid, something that was predicted by a leak from earlier this year.
The AMD Ryzen AI Max Plus 395 scores 2,894 points in Geekbench's single-core test. That is more or less on par with the Ryzen 9 7945HX (2,880) from two generations ago, the more recent Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (2,857) and even the low-power Core Ultra 9 288V (2,864). Interestingly, the Strix Halo flagship lags behind the last-gen Core i9-14900HX, which averaged at around 3,016 in our tests.
The part clearly needs some optimization, as confirmed by Geekbench's frequency table. Here, the CPU is shown to peak at 5.2 GHz, whereas the main listing shows its boost clock at 3.939 GHz. Plus, the memory (24 GB) is shown to run at a paltry 1,944 MT/s when it is tipped to run at 8,000 MT/s. Either way, Strix Halo won't see the light of day until next year, so AMD and Asus have some time to iron out its kinks.
Moving on to multicore performance, we can see the sixteen Zen 5 cores on the AMD Ryzen AI Max Plus 395 truly shine. It scores 20,708 points, putting it above all the above-mentioned CPUs. Because Strix Point features a mix of Zen 5 and Zen 5c cores, the only comparison we can make is with the Ryzen 9 7945HX (16,765 average score). With that figure in mind, Strix Halo offers a 25% performance uplift over its Zen 4 counterpart.
While the Ryzen AI Max Plus 395 may have its x86 counterparts beat, it gets absolutely bodied by Apple's M4 Pro: an Arm-based competitor with 2 fewer CPU cores. According to our benchmark database, it scored 3,382 and 22,527 points in Geekbench 6.3. Sure, it doesn't paint an entire picture of a processor's performance, but Strix Halo is unlikely to make up for that much of a delta, even with proper software support.
