Low-power Strix Halo APU specs and performance leak: 8x Zen 5 cores and more than 25% iGPU bump vs Radeon 890M
We reported back in May that AMD had prepared plans to release at least four different Strix Halo SKUs:
- The flagship Strix Halo “Best” APU with 16 Zen 5 cores and 40 RDNA 3.5 Compute Units.
- The middle-of-the-road Strix Halo “Better” and “Good” with up to 8 cores and 32 CUs.
- The entry-level Strix Halo LP or Halo 128-bit with 6/8 Zen 5 cores and a 20 CU iGPU.
The report came to us courtesy of serial leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead who has now doubled down on his Strix Halo LP leak while revealing a few more details.
AMD Strix Halo LP specifications
The Strix Halo Low-Power (LP) reportedly features 8x Zen 5 cores and a 20 CU RDNA 3.5 iGPU. MLID suggests that the APU will have a 128-bit wide bus which, per the leaker’s previous assertion, could afford the iGPU a total bandwidth of 135 GB/s.
Interestingly, MLID’s source also claimed 16 MB of Infinity Cache for the Radeon 8000S Strix Halo LP iGPU. The presence of 16 MB of IC, although not as big as entry-level desktop cards like the RX 7600 XT, will give the Strix Halo LP some much-needed breathing room, as the APU’s alleged bandwidth is quite low at just 135 GB/s.
Strix Halo LP performance and TDP
MLID reports the Strix Halo LP iGPU is to deliver RTX 3050 Max-Q performance, as the APU is meant “to directly compete with (more power hungry) RTX 3050 W Max-Q + i7 laptops”. Since Intel has moved away from the whole “Core i” branding, we can substitute the Core i7 with Core Ultra 7.
Our database shows that the RTX 3050 Max-Q scores, on average, 4,448 points in 3DMark Time Spy Graphics. Compared to the Radeon 890M’s average score, the RTX 3050 Max-Q is 26% faster. So, if the Strix Halo LP’s iGPU offers RTX 3050-like performance, we can expect the weakest Strix Halo APU to be a whopping 26% faster than the Radeon 890M.
Finally, MLID’s source also reported that, while AMD could release Strix Halo SKUs that consume even less than Halo LP’s 105 W, the company’s current plan is to keep Strix Point to service the 15-54 W segment.
Fortunately, CES 2025 is only a month way and AMD seems to have a packed show planned, including the possible reveal of Strix Halo APUs. So, we’ll soon know if the Strix Halo LP is actually a thing and how does it stack up against Team Red’s current offerings.
