Following the precedent the company established with the new “Ryzen AI” naming scheme of the Strix Point APUs, AMD is now set to overhaul its GPU branding. Unlike the “RX xx00 XT” naming of the RDNA 3 GPUs, AMD is reportedly going with the “RX x0x0 XT” type branding. So, where the 70-class RDNA 3 card is called the RX 7700 XT, the upcoming RDNA 4 entry is allegedly marketed under the RX 9070 XT moniker.
This change is also moving to Team Red’s upcoming iGPUs. So, the Strix Halo Ryzen AI Max chips will have iGPUs branded under the “Radeon 80x0S” branding. The Radeon 8060S and the Radeon 8050S are currently the only two Strix Halo iGPUs we know about. Featured inside the Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 395 and the Ryzen AI Max Pro 390, the Radeon 8060S and 8050S have now made an appearance in the PassMark database. This gives us a preliminary look at the synthetic performance of the Strix Halo iGPUs.
Strix Halo iGPU: Radeon 8060S and Radeon 8050S performance
According to the PassMark entries, the Radeon 8060S and the Radeon 8050S score 15,965 and 16,663, respectively, in the PassMark’s 3D Graphics test. The mere fact that the Radeon 8050S, with its 8x fewer CUs, is appearing faster than the Radeon 8060S is enough to tell us that these PassMark entries are of preliminary Strix Halo samples and not retail products.
That said, we can use these preliminary scores to get an idea of the final performance of the Strix Halo iGPUs. These scores put the Radeon 8060S/8050S above the RX 7600 by a small margin. Moreover, the RTX 4070 laptop GPU scores around 19,609 points in the 3D Graphics test, making the 16,663 score of the Strix Halo iGPU 15% slower. It is not hard to imagine the retail Radeon 8060S closing this gap.
All in all, the upcoming Strix Halo iGPUs should be a massive step up from the current crop of AMD iGPUs. Users can expect the Strix Halo iGPUs to make entry-level to mid-range dedicated mobile GPUs redundant or, at the very least, much less enticing.
