The upcoming AMD Strix Halo APUs are shaping up to be quite impressive with a powerful Zen 5 CPU and an RDNA 3.5 iGPU. Per the latest Strix Halo specs and performance leak from Moore's Law Is Dead, the flagship Strix Halo iGPU is powerful enough to go against the RTX 4070 laptop GPU. Additionally, the leaker reveals that the APUs will debut inside workstations in Q1 2025.

AMD Strix Halo or the Ryzen AI Max 300 APUs are expected to debut at CES 2025 in the form of three distinct products:

  1. Ryzen AI Max 385
  2. Ryzen AI Max 390
  3. Ryzen AI Max+ 395

These APUs are said to pack up to 16 Zen 5 cores alongside a powerful RDNA 3.5 iGPU that rivals discrete laptop GPUs. In his latest leak, Moore’s Law Is Dead alleges that the Strix Halo APUs will be marketed under the "Ryzen AI Max Pro" branding. The leaker also confirms the specs, iGPU performance, and the release cadence of the Strix Halo machines.

AMD Strix Halo specs

Starting with general specs, MLID confirms that the flagship Strix Halo APU, which is expected to be the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, features 16 Zen 5 cores, a 40 CU RDNA 3.5 iGPU, and a 120 W TDP. The Strix Halo APUs also reportedly support LPDDR5X 8533 MT/s memory, with the memory size capped at 128 GB.

Naturally, the 128 GB memory spec is meant for workstations. Machines with 128 GB memory will debut in Q2 2025, while devices with 32 and 64 GB are seemingly set for a Q1 2025 release.

When it comes to the release date, MLID claims that, after an unveiling at CES, workstations equipped with the Ryzen AI Max APUs will debut in Q1 followed by gaming laptops in Q2’25. The leaker further posits that if the new APUs are popular, we might also see some Strix Halo small form factor Mini PCs in the future.

Strix Halo iGPU performance

While the 16-core Zen 5 CPU is a big part of the Strix Halo design, the new RDNA 3.5 iGPU is undoubtedly the star of the show. MLID reiterates the RTX 4070 laptop-level performance claim from June 2024 and states that the Strix Halo flagship “at least trades blows” with the RTX 4070 laptop GPU.

If Strix Halo iGPU indeed performs like an RTX 4070 laptop, it would be a phenomenal increase over the current AMD top dog, the Radeon 890M, and would put the company far ahead of the Intel Arc 140V. Then again, we can’t pit these iGPUs against each other directly since the Strix Halo will be much more power-hungry.
