iPhone 17 Plus tipped to launch with less than 17 Pro Max-sixed display
The 14 Plus was touted as the most versatile (and accessible) iPhone on its launch, being a version of Apple's 'original' vanilla variant with the same display size as the top-end Pro Max model as it is. However, its 2025 successor is now touted to be the first of its kind to lose that status.
The Display Supply Chain Consultants group's ever-present representative Ross Young is back on Twitter/X, indicating that the iPhone 17 Plus will have a display smaller than that of the 17 Pro Max - not to mention that of the iPhone 16 Plus.
That might imply a possibility of an all-new size option in the 2025 Plus model, an idea Apple seemed to have abandoned with the doomed 13 Mini.
Then again, with rumors that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the one to start the divergence from its Plus counterpart to get even bigger in 2024, it is possible that the 17 Plus will simply have a second-gen version of its predecessor's display.
It may or may not stay at the classic ~6.7-inch mark, leaving the 16 Pro Max - and, thus, the 17 Pro Max - to progress to screen diagonals of ~6.8-inches (or more).
Then again, Apple's plans might prove more straightforward than that and keep making Plus and Pro Max front panels of the same size as usual, just with the rumored new ultra-thin bezel technology to confer the apparently impending display differential on the latter.
Either way, all of this alleged size SKU diversification might result in yet more production expenses for Apple that could be passed on to the consumer, particularly as iPhones are projected to finally upgrade to 120Hz Pro Motion across the board by 2025.
