Ross Young has shed new light on Apple's plans for next-generation iPad Air tablets. Aligning with rumours that stretch back to October 2023, Young claims that Apple has developed a new larger size to complement its existing 10.9-inch model (curr. $499.99 on Amazon). As such, the iPad Air (6th generation) is expected to mirror the iPad Pro series with 11-inch and 12.9-inch options.
Further than that, Young asserts that the iPad Air 12.9 will rely upon the same panel as the outgoing iPad Pro 12.9. According to 9to5Mac, Young informed his X (Twitter) subscribers:
Surprise! The upcoming 12.9″ iPad Air has a MiniLED display...This will consume left over panels from the 12.9″ MiniLED iPad Pro and offer lower power than an edge lit LCD...
Consequently, the iPad Air 12.9 should deliver 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness through 2,500 local dimming zones with 1,000 nits full panel brightness as well as. Moreover, the 10,000 Mini LEDs will deliver a significantly higher contrast ratio than the LCD in the current iPad Air 10.9 manages, along with improved colour accuracy to boot. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen whether Apple will bring its 120 Hz ProMotion technology to the iPad Air 12.9, too. Although as much may be implied by Young's post, there is no guarantee that Apple would bring a 'Pro' feature to a non-Pro device.
