All iPhone 17 models slated to get 120 Hz LTPO panels in 2025, first under-display Face ID to debut with iPhone 17 Pro followed by true all-screen iPhone 19 Pro in 2027
In-display fingerprint sensors created headlines when Vivo first introduced the X20 Plus UD back during CES 2018. Now, we see in-display fingerprint scanners even in budget devices. Apple has remained content with its Touch ID to Face ID transition from the iPhone X days. However, that might change in the near future.
Display analyst Ross Young earlier predicted that Apple may move to an under-display Face ID with the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024. This plan seems to have been delayed due to technical reasons, and Apple is likely to persist with the current Dynamic Island implementation.
Come 2025, however, and the iPhone 17 Pro will likely be the first to sport an under-display Face ID. Young feels that Apple will still use at least a round punch hole for the selfie camera. A true all-screen iPhone is unlikely to see the light of the day before 2027's iPhone 19 Pro.
Young's roadmap also seems to indicate that standard iPhone 19 models will be getting under-display Face IDs as well in 2027, but these phones will still feature a punch hole.
The iPhone 17 generation will also be the first wherein all models across the stack will feature ProMotion displays. These are expected to be 120 Hz LTPO panels, according to Young.
In the immediate future, we can expect to see the Dynamic Island make its way to the regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
