The eConnect smart system for Haibike and Winora e-bikes is being discontinued. In an announcement from parent company WINORA-STAIGER GmbH, customers were advised to speak to local dealers to find an alternative solution. Features of eConnect include GPS tracking and SOS alerts.

WINORA-STAIGER GmbH has announced that it will discontinue its eConnect remote e-bike control service on March 15th, affecting Winora and Haibike customers. eConnect was a retrofit kit that also came as standard with some older models. Those who had the gadget were provided free access to the iOS and Android apps and a web portal.

The eConnect smart system has a range of functions, including tracking the location of your e-bike, receiving theft notifications and sending an emergency SMS if a crash is detected. The eConnect web portal also allows customers to view and export journey and route data, which can be shared with third-party apps like Strava or Komoot. It is unclear why WINORA-STAIGER is removing this service. The company confirmed that from March 15th, tracking data would no longer be processed, and the apps would be removed from the relevant stores. Plus, it stated that personal data would be deleted in line with GDPR.

In a message to Haibike customers, WINORA-STAIGER said that the rest of the functionality of its e-bikes would not be affected and suggested users speak to a local e-bike dealer to find a suitable alternative solution for GPS tracking and SOS alerts. While a concealed tracker like an Apple AirTag could be used instead of eConnect for location tracking, its removability limits its usefulness.
