Zelda: Ocarina of Time Switch 2 gameplay reveal confirms massive open-world overhaul

Nintendo’s 40th Anniversary Zelda Direct has concluded, finally pulling the curtain back on the highly anticipated Ocarina of Time remake for the Switch 2. Putting months of speculation to rest, the presentation confirmed that the project is a dramatic reimagining rather than a 1:1 port. The broadcast showcased a completely seamless Hyrule and heavily redesigned gameplay systems that bear the unmistakable fingerprint of co-developer Monolith Soft.
The showcase's centerpiece was a five-minute gameplay deep dive. The footage highlighted the departure from the 1998 original by demonstrating a transition-free open world. Link was shown riding Epona straight from Hyrule Field into a vastly expanded Castle Town without a single loading screen.
The geographical scale appears to bridge the gap between the compact design of the Nintendo 64 era and the sprawling maps of recent mainline entries, offering a denser, more populated kingdom with dynamic weather systems.
Combat has also received a modern overhaul. While the foundational Z-targeting system remains intact, the mechanics have been updated for a faster, fluid third-person action experience. The trailer showcased new parry mechanics, dynamic dodging, and the ability to swap equipment on the fly, moving away from the static, stop-and-go rhythm of the original game's swordplay.
Perhaps the most significant change for longtime fans was the complete structural redesign of the game's dungeons. The presentation offered a brief glimpse into the infamous Water Temple, revealing a multi-layered, physics-based environment rather than a traditional key-and-door labyrinth.
Series producer Eiji Aonuma briefly appeared on stream to emphasize that while the core narrative beats and iconic musical motifs remain faithful, every puzzle and boss encounter has been built from the ground up to leverage the Switch 2's processing power.
Closing the segment, Nintendo officially confirmed the recent retail leaks regarding the game's launch window and associated hardware. The Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will launch globally on November 12, 2026. The digital version is priced at $59.99, while physical copies will retail for $70. Accompanying the release is the previously leaked Collector's Edition and a dedicated Switch 2 hardware bundle featuring a custom gold-and-green Pro Controller, solidifying the remake as the flagship title for the new console's holiday lineup.
