Zelda 40th anniversary Direct: Fans are hoping for these three announcements

On September 8, 2026, Nintendo will dedicate an entire Direct to the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda. The presentation begins at 10 AM EDT and is expected to last around 30 minutes. For now, what announcements are planned is purely a matter of speculation – and fans on Reddit are doing plenty of that. Three specific hopes emerge from a recent thread: new information about the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a first trailer for the planned live-action movie and the return of older entries in the series.
Ocarina of Time likely to take center stage
The already announced Ocarina of Time remake is therefore almost certain to be featured in the upcoming Nintendo Direct. Fans are hoping for a release date and new information about the game itself. So far, Nintendo has only shown a brief announcement trailer. What improvements the remake will bring and exactly when it will launch remain unclear. However, a Swedish retailer has listed November 12, 2026 as a tentative release date, which sounds entirely plausible. Much to the delight of fans, a leak also suggests that the remake could potentially be more than just a 1:1 recreation of the original 1998 game.
Switch 2 ports of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess
In addition to news about the Ocarina of Time remake, fans are also hoping the Zelda Direct will bring new Switch 2 ports of older Zelda games. The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD are mentioned particularly often. Both titles were already remastered for the Wii U, but have yet to make their way to Nintendo's current hardware. Some fans would like to see both games released as a bundle for the Switch 2. Fans are not ruling out a shadow drop either. Nintendo could, for example, release a Zelda classic or remaster immediately after the presentation. However, there are currently no concrete indications that this will happen.
First trailer for the Zelda movie?
Another likely item on the agenda is the live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. The theatrical release is scheduled for April 30, 2027. With marketing for the movie likely to begin in the coming months, many fans are expecting at least a teaser or the first footage.
