Anyone who enjoys fast-paced first-person shooters and has never played Serious Sam has definitely been missing out. Gamers can now catch up, as Steam is currently offering a cheap opportunity to do so: Serious Sam Classics: Revolution is 90% off, bringing the price down to $0.99 from $9.99. The collection includes The First Encounter and The Second Encounter, the first two entries in the series, originally released in 2001 and 2002, respectively. According to SteamDB, this matches the previous all-time low, last reached during the 2026 Summer Sale.

In the distant future, humanity is on the brink of extinction: The alien warlord Mental and his grotesque army have invaded Earth and nearly wiped out the human race. Their last hope is Sam “Serious” Stone, who uses an ancient alien artifact to travel around 3,000 years into the past. In ancient Egypt, he must get ahead of Mental and find a way to reach his home planet. The Second Encounter picks up the story immediately afterward and sends the heavily armed action hero through locations including Central America, ancient Babylon and medieval Europe.

The story mainly serves as an excuse to throw ever more hordes of monsters at Sam. Above all, the gameplay is fast. Taking cover plays virtually no role. Players have to stay constantly on the move, dodge projectiles and try to find the right weapon for each enemy type. There are plenty to choose from, including a double-barreled shotgun, rocket launcher, minigun and freeze gun.

The Steam reviews show that the Serious Sam formula still works decades later. The First Encounter holds a 95% positive rating from more than 3,400 reviews. However, players should not expect much variety. Serious Sam is all about shooting – followed by even more shooting. Steam lists Steam Deck compatibility as “Unsupported.” According to ProtonDB, however, the game should run without issues on Valve's handheld after a few tweaks.
