September 11th 8:05 PM CEST update: A Geekbench entry widely reported as the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max was running a spoofed model name. The hardware behind the run is a Qualcomm reference device for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, the chip previously tipped as the 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, which posted 3,582 in single-core and 12,247 in multi-core on Geekbench 7 with two cores clocked at 5.11GHz and an Adreno 850 GPU.

This article originally reported the Geekbench listing as a Xiaomi 18 Pro Max. However, it has come to our attention that the listing carried a spoofed model name. The hardware behind the run is a Qualcomm reference device, the engineering platform the company uses to validate silicon before handset makers build around it. What the entry does show is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, the chip previously tipped as the 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.

The chip appears under the identifier SM8975. Its eight cores split into three groups, with three running at 3.74GHz, three at 4.03GHz and two reaching 5.11GHz, and graphics fall to an Adreno 850. That top figure is the highest clock yet recorded in a smartphone processor, though an earlier run of the same silicon held around 4.6GHz through the test rather than sustaining its ceiling.

Performance came in at 3,582 points in single-core and 12,247 in multi-core on Geekbench 7. The unit reported 11.0GB of available memory, pointing to a 12GB configuration, and ran Android 17. The same device also completed the platform’s graphics tests, scoring 26,210 in OpenCL and 29,934 in Vulkan.

Setting those numbers against Apple’s is not possible from this listing. Geekbench 7 uses a different scale from version 6, which is what most published comparisons still rely on, and pre-release hardware varies between runs and software builds.

Apple has made its own claims for the A20 Pro, describing a 2nm chip with a seven-core GPU it says runs up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro, along with a doubled Neural Engine and 50 percent more memory bandwidth. Neither set of figures settles anything until retail devices can be tested side by side.

The listing arrives in the middle of a crowded stretch for flagship silicon. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 Pro both debut this month, and several handsets have already passed through the database. The Vivo X500 Pro Max and Oppo Find X10 Pro Max have surfaced with Dimensity 9600 hardware, while the iQOO 16 appeared with the Snapdragon.
