Xiaomi: Mi Mix 3 5G finally primed for a new update as MIUI 12 looms
Weeks ago, we reported that Xiaomi had relayed its plans to finally send out the MIUI 12 update to the Mi Mix 3 5G in October. That was followed by rumors indicating such plans may have been invalid. Thankfully, those rumors appear to have been a touch misguided.
Xiaomi has once again confirmed that it will roll out the MIUI 12 update to the Mi Mix 3 5G in October. The Mi Mix 3 5G was launched last year and remains on Android Pie and MIUI 10. The planned update will take the phone up to MIUI 12, skipping MIUI 11 entirely. However, the last-gen flagship phone is unlikely to receive the Android 10 update.
Therein lies the source of confusion, as the reports claiming the phone wouldn't receive any update were based on a response as to the phone's chances of getting Android 10. So, no, the Mi Mix 3 5G will likely not ever receive Android 10. That's a shame, really, and shows a complete disregard for those who shelled out money for what was marketed as a premium phone just eighteen months ago.
That said, MIUI updates are OS-agnostic, and the MIUI 12 update will bring all the surface-level features available on Xiaomi phones running Android 10.
Going by official correspondence, the Mi Mix 3 5G should've received a security patch in late July. We're in August now, however, so it shouldn't take much longer. After the imminent update, the phone is slated to get MIUI 12 in October, another security update in December, and a third security patch in March 2021.
We'll keep you updated on this.
