Gamers accustomed to multi-monitor setups may discover Xbox Mode has limitations. When enabled, the console-inspired menus disable additional displays, interrupting multi-tasking. The UI has more advantages for the upcoming Project Helix Xbox console and gaming PCs connected to TVs.

As Microsoft rolls out Xbox Mode to more gaming PCs, testers are discovering it has shortcomings. The console-oriented interface makes it easier to find and launch games with a controller. However, when active, it comes at the expense of dual-monitor multitasking.

Xbox Mode is not multi-monitor friendly

Windows Central reported on a social media post about the UI that was attracting attention. KidSmoove highlighted that, in a multi-screen array, Xbox Mode blanks the secondary displays. Jez Corden noted that the feature was intended for TVs, but it’s still a disappointment to some users.

With Project Helix arriving as early as 2027, the hybrid console/PC could offer the best of both worlds. If based on Microsoft’s OS as expected, it may allow players to access Windows-compatible and Xbox games. It’s also anticipated that it will use menus similar to the new interface that’s available on handhelds, desktops, and laptops.

For impatient buyers who want to emulate the system now, there are limitations with dual-monitor setups. On gaming PCs, some users enjoy keeping programs open on the side, whether they are Discord or a browser playing YouTube videos. Other players who want to consult a tutorial may need to minimize the game.

Valve again does it better?

Some critics point out that the Steam Big Picture Mode doesn’t have the same drawback. Learning from its efforts to streamline the launcher, Valve will soon debut the Steam Machine in living rooms.

It’s possible that Microsoft will tweak Xbox Mode to accommodate dual monitors. A recent study found that about 65% of those surveyed relied on secondary screens. Still, not all of their configurations were gaming-focused. Several posters responding to KidSmoove argued that his example was a niche case.

The UI suffers from other annoyances, like not playing nicely with sleep mode. Nevertheless, at least during entertainment hours, it can transform a gaming PC into a console alternative.
