In recent years, Android OEMs have gradually been bringing the robustness of their foldables up to the level of their candybar counterparts. Initially renowned for being especially fragile, foldables have now reached the stage where they often match the water resistance of current flagships.
For instance, the Oppo Find N5, X Fold3 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold6 (curr. $1,073 - refurbished on Amazon), among others, have been certified to an 8 or 9 for liquid ingress protection. Conversely, only Samsung's foldables have received a solid particle protection rating of any kind. Even then, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition can only withstand solid particles that measure 1 mm or larger.
According to Vivo executive Han Bo Xiao, the forthcoming X Fold5 will step this up to 5 for solid particle protection. As a result, the device is considered 'dust protected' but not 'dust tight'. In other words, while some dust and other fine debris may enter the inside of the X Fold5, it should not interfere with its normal operations.
The same executive also mentions that the X Fold5 is waterproof to IPX9 and IPX9+. Although not a recognised standard, Vivo claims that IPX9+ ensures that the X Fold5 can be folded 1,000 times when submerged in up to 1 metre of water without suffering any damage. To that end, the company has authorised the publication of a short promotional video, which we have embedded above. Incidentally, the video provides a glimpse at the device as a whole, as well as Vivo's new green colourway. The X Fold5's release date still escapes Vivo's teasers for the time being, though.
