Teasers about Vivo's upcoming foldable, the X Fold 5, have started emerging online. This hints at an imminent release, and Vivo might beat Samsung to the punch. Some new promotional material suggests the Vivo X Fold 5 might be even lighter than it last-gen counterpart.
The company's official teaser shows what looks to be an X Fold 5 sitting alongside the Vivo X Fold 3 on a weighing scale. This implies the Vivo X Fold 5 will be lighter than 219 grams; pretty impressive for a foldable smartphone. Vivo's official Weibo post also mentions a "three-proof folding" mechanism. The machine translation might have left out key context highlighting what it means, but we'll know soon enough.
But, the Vivo X Fold 5 might face tough competition from the Honor Magic V5 that is also slated to arrive later this month with one of the largest batteries ever on a foldable device, putting further pressure on Samsung's putative Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Vivo was careful to not show off the X Fold 5's rear camera module during its tests. That is likely to obfuscate the lack of any meaningful upgrades. Like its predecessor, it will use a last-gen flagship SoC from Qualcomm, which, in this case, is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It is clear the Vivo X Fold 5 will only be incrementally better than its precursor, with the actual upgrades being reserved for the Vivo X Fold 5 Pro.
