Samsung EM32DX: 32-inch color e-ink display with months of battery life now available
We've previously reported on the Samsung EM32DX, which has now become available at various online retailers, some of which also sell to regular consumers. Prices at Samsung’s official business store start at $1,200, but PCNation has already discounted the display to $1,166. These prices are pretty high for a 31.5-inch screen, because the EM32DX is not a typical IPS or OLED monitor, but sports an e-ink panel.
More specifically, the E Ink Spectra 6 Color panel can display 54,600 colors thanks to dithering, although they won’t be particularly vivid. Furthermore, the QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels is quite a bit lower compared to the conventional 4K panels that are often used in this price range.
With that said, the EM32DX also has a couple of obvious advantages. For example, it comes with a built-in battery that can last up to 500 days if the content on display is changed only once every three days. Even with much more frequent image changes, the model should still last for several months. The 4,600mAh battery can likely be charged with a power bank, in which case a power cable is not necessary.
Moreover, the Samsung display is just 0.7 inches thick and should be suitable for showing things like timetables or advertisements. The electronic sign can be conveniently managed via WiFi and a smartphone. Lastly, the screen should be readable even without a backlight, at least if there’s a decent amount of ambient light.
