The release of the PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) remains a while off yet, with an autumn release reputedly being targeted. Nonetheless, leaked internal documents have revealed even more details about the Sony PS5 Pro, including one that would put it ahead of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 in certain scenarios.

The Verge has disclosed more information about Sony's alleged PlayStation 5 refresh. To recap, Tom Henderson and Moore's Law is Dead (MLID) leaked specifications for the PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) in mid-March. This time around, The Verge claims to have seen internal Sony documents that not only confirms last month's leak but provides a few new details too.

On the one hand, The Verge reports that the PS5 Pro will have a Zen 2 architecture-derived CPU that contains eight cores clocked by default at 3.5 GHz. However, Sony will afford the CPU a special mode where it can boost its peak clock speed to 3.85 GHz. The Verge adds that this mode will result in a 10% CPU boost but also a 1% GPU performance drop because of a 1.5% GPU downclock. In other words, The Verge's information matches that Henderson shared last month. Meanwhile, the PS5 Pro's GPU is said to deliver 45% better rendering performance than the one that powers all current PS5 consoles (curr. $449.99 on Amazon).

Aligning with previous rumours, The Verge writes that the new GPU features 30 Work Group Processors (WGPs), up from 18 WGPs. Allegedly, the 66% WGP uplift will be joined by a switch to AMD's RDNA 3 architecture, as well as 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. Moreover, the memory bandwidth is expected to increase by 28% to 576 GB/s. On the other hand, other optimisations should allow developers to allocate 13.7 GB of RAM for games, instead of the 12.5 GB available to non-Pro PS5 consoles.

Furthermore, The Verge asserts that the console's new GPU enables 300 TOPS of theoretical AI performance, which should see the PS5 Pro outperform the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 in this regard. Reportedly, the PS5 Pro will use its AI power to support PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony's alternative to AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS. The Verge adds that PSSR will target 4K gameplay with a 2 ms latency from a 1080p image source, which Sony will mark as 'PS5 Pro Enhanced' on games that support the feature. Supposedly, Sony is already delivering PS5 Pro dev kits and remains on track to release retail units towards the end of the year.
