Seiko launches all-black steam locomotive chronograph limited to 5,000 watches

A steam locomotive's smokebox door might seem an unlikely starting point for a wristwatch dial. Yet that is exactly where Seiko's latest Japanese collaboration draws its inspiration.
Released on 14 October through Premico, the D51 Steam Locomotive Collaboration Watch commemorates Japan's D51-class steam engines, particularly locomotive No. 200. Production is limited to 5,000 watches, with a Japanese price of ¥76,780 including tax.
The model's predominantly black finish references the locomotive's exterior, while gold-coloured details reproduce elements of its front.
A locomotive's headlamp and number plate on the dial

A headlamp motif appears at twelve o'clock, with a gold D51 200 number plate immediately below. The subdial at six o'clock incorporates a design resembling the handle of the locomotive's smokebox door.
According to Imperial Enterprise's announcement, D51 No. 200 has been preserved in operational condition by JR West and has hauled the SL Yamaguchi tourist train.
The timing carries additional significance. D51 No. 200 was among the Umekoji steam locomotives designated a quasi-railway monument on 14 October 2006, exactly 20 years before the watch's launch. The date is also Japan's Railway Day, commemorating the country's first railway opening in 1872.
The watch itself has a stainless-steel case and bracelet, measuring approximately 47 × 39.8 × 12.8 mm. Its curved Hardlex crystal protects a Japanese-made quartz chronograph movement rated to within ±15 seconds per month. Water resistance is specified at 10 bar.
Premico supplies the watch in a black presentation box with gold D51 No. 200 branding and an interior photograph of the locomotive.
Orders opened in Japan on 14 October, with dispatch expected from mid-January 2027. Premico notes that its images show a development sample, so the final product may differ slightly.
Premico has also offered a separate Seiko chronograph inspired by the One Piece Shinkansen.
