Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro is over 40% thicker than advertised
It seems that Samsung has an interesting way of measuring the dimensions of its latest smartwatches. According to the company, the Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro are 9.8 mm and 10.5 mm thick, respectively. Based on these dimensions, the Galaxy Watch5 Pro is thinner than the Apple Watch Series 7, which comes in at 10.7 mm. However, YouTuber DC Rainmaker has discovered otherwise, although the discrepancies are not entirely straightforward.
In short, most smartwatch manufacturers do not include how far the sensor module protrudes in their smartwatch dimensions. As such, the Watch Series 7 is actually 13.14 mm thick, 2.4 mm and 22.8% thicker than Apple advertises. While Apple is one of many smartwatch manufacturers that adopt this method of measuring their smartwatches, others are more forthcoming. For instance, Fitbit provides dimensions including the sensor module; Wahoo even underestimates the thickness of its smartwatches.
As for the Galaxy Watch5, DC Rainmaker determines that both sizes are 13.09 mm thick, 33.7% and 3.3 mm more so than Samsung advertises. The difference between Samsung's advertising and reality is even worse with the Galaxy Watch5 Pro, which DC Rainmaker measures at 15.07 mm, 43.5% and 4.6 mm thicker than Samsung's claims of 10.5 mm. Additionally, Samsung's weight measurements for both the Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro exclude their bundled watch straps.
Again, this is a common trend among smartwatch manufacturers. In saying that, many acknowledge that this is the case, which Samsung fails to do. Overall, it may be worth trying on a Galaxy Watch5 or Galaxy Watch5 Pro before you pick one up, considering how far off Samsung's measurements are. Incidentally, DC Rainmaker has shown that the Galaxy Watch5 Pro is as large as an Oreo Double Stuff, sold in the US as the Oreo Double Stuf and the Oreo Double Creme in Europe.
