Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami’s Unbound studio acquired by Shift Up, new game in development

Shift Up, the studio behind Stellar Blade, has acquired all shares of Unbound, bringing the Japan-based studio fully under its control. The announcement, made on April 1, 2026, is part of Shift Up’s push to build and release more PC and console games.
Unbound is led by Shinji Mikami, known for Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and The Evil Within. The studio is already working on new original games for PC and consoles with a team of experienced developers from Japan and global markets.

Shift Up says the deal will help it make more PC and console games while also taking a bigger role in publishing upcoming titles from Unbound.
CEO Hyung Tae Kim pointed to the bigger picture here, bringing in Shinji Mikami and his team to work on larger, more ambitious projects.
Mikami added that this setup allows both teams to focus on building a new original game with more resources and a stronger development backing.
