Apple's Game Porting Toolkit offers a relatively straightforward way for developers to port Windows games to macOS, but most AAA titles are still only available for Microsoft’s operating system. However, Wine is a free open-source software that allows Mac users to run Windows applications and games on an Apple computer.
CrossOver is a new software based on Wine. It’s not free but promises a significantly simpler user interface and numerous convenient features. For example, CrossOver can essentially be used as a launcher for Windows games without requiring any technical knowledge. With a single click, users should be able to access their game library and run thousands of Windows games. There is a compatibility database, which currently lists more than 20,800 officially supported games and apps.
CrossOver 25 is the latest version of this software, which supposedly includes over 5,000 improvements in total. Among other things, it's worth mentioning that the Windows version of Steam now starts up significantly faster, and the Epic Games Store and GOG Galaxy are now officially supported as well. CrossOver 25 automatically further selects the optimal settings for different games. The software has added support for Red Dead Redemption 2, Dragon's Dogma 2, The Last of Us Part I and Age of Wonders 4. Those titles even run on Macs with an ARM chipset.
Price and availability
CrossOver 25 is available now on CodeWeavers’ official website. A license for the current version costs $74 and includes twelve months of updates. Alternatively, Mac gamers who want to receive lifetime updates can opt for CrossOver Life for $494.
